Abstract

A simple and inexpensive fabrication process for PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) membranes was proposed and studied to overcome conventional complex processes. Inspired from oating oil membranes on water, the fabrication process for thin PDMS membrane without expensive apparatuses and complex processes was developed. Constraint rings with the material of polystyrene constraining thicknesses and sizes of the membrane were designed, based on theoretical backgrounds of Young’s equation associated with surface energy. The diameters of constraint ring were 50 and 70 mm, the volumes of dispensed PDMS were 200, 300 and 400 μL. The results revealed that the thickness of the thin membrane decreased as the diameter of the constraint ring increased. Incomplete filling of PDMS on the constraint ring and several bubbles were sometimes observed during soft baking process. It indicates that the heating temperature and the heating time for baking are also important factors in fabrication of the membrane.
